Senator Lisa Murkowski is considered a center-left Republican. Though decent on pro-life and Second Amendment issues, she is well left of center on fiscal and immigration issues. Murkowski is one of 10 Republican Senators who refused to commit to Bill Frist's effort to end the Democrats' filibusters of judicial nominees.

Murkowski voted with Democrats and moderate Republicans on H.R. 976, which called for the expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to provide coverage for 9 million additional uninsured children. That bill passed both the House and the Senate, but was vetoed by Pres. Bush.
